Can I skip payment on debt review?
You Can't Skip a Payment without having a valid reason.
If you fail to make payment in no uncertain terms, you are taking a step back and further away from reaching financial freedom again. Your creditors will have sufficient legal grounds to terminate your Debt Review and commence legal action against you.
Unless all the accounts are paid up or the consumer becomes entitled to a clearance certificate, the only way to terminate the debt review process, according to the NCR's Withdrawal from Debt Review Guidelines, is to apply to court for either the rescission of the debt review order if one was obtained, or for a ...
A: Yes, that is a great way to speed up your Debt Review program. When you have extra income (like a tax repayment, a bonus or salary increase) you can contact one of the DebtSafe Debt Counsellors to make the arrangements for you.
The answer: Yes, you can pay your creditors directly while under debt review if you choose to do so from the start. A consumer in debt review has two options for repaying their debts, according to the National Credit Act: Pay your debt yourself, or allow your debt counsellor to do it for you.
If you've already missed a payment, you need to contact your DMP provider immediately. Missing a payment will mean your creditors don't get the monthly payment they're expecting, which may mean they decide to stop co-operating with your DMP.
Debt review is not a quick fix. It's a thorough process typically spanning 3 to 5 years, depending on the aforementioned factors. During this period, consumers are expected to live within a budget and meet their renegotiated payment obligations.
The cost of removing a person from the debt review system varies depending on the amount of outstanding debt and credit providers involved. Generally, it can take between R1 000 and R30 000 to remove someone from the system including fees for legal advice or guidance in negotiating settlements with creditors.
However, you should be aware that debt review is a long-term process and it can take years to fully pay off your debt. Debt consolidation is a good option if you're looking for a more immediate solution. This process involves taking out a loan to pay off your existing debts.
The Cons: You will not be allowed to get credit while in the program. Your Debt Review will be listed on your credit record until the completion of the program or when all your debt listed under Debt Review are paid up in full. The payment period of your debt will be extended in order to lower your monthly instalments.
What is the longest you can be under debt review?
This depends on how much debt you have and how much you are able to pay towards this debt each month. The longest time an individual may undergo debt counselling is 5 years.

How will debt review affect your credit score? It's also important to note that after debt review, your credit report will be updated and the only thing showing should be your payment history. This means that your credit score should be low. Think of debt review as an opportunity to start afresh and with a clean slate.
Importantly, there are legal requirements in place to ensure the prompt removal of the debt review flag. Credit bureaus are obligated by law to remove the flag within 21 days of receiving the clearance certificate.
Remember, opening a new bank account such as a current (cheque) or savings account is not the same as applying for credit. Unlike with applying for new credit, you are able to do so when you're under debt review.
If you are still under Debt Counselling you will not be able to access any form of finance as this will violate the contract you have with your current creditors. If you have received your clearance certificate or cancelled your Debt Counselling you will then be able to apply for finance through the usual process.
Is a DMP legally binding? No. You can stop your DMP at any time, and you don't have to make a legal commitment when starting a DMP. You usually need to sign a DMP agreement form.
If you have a current account with a company you owe money to, you will be required to open a new bank account. This is not only the case with a DMP but you should change your bank account if you are going to make reduced payments to a company that you also bank with.
Certain Debts Are Ineligible
DMPs generally don't include secured loans, like mortgages and auto loans, and some types of unsecured loans, such as student loans. Counselors may be able to offer guidance on how best to repay these debts, but you'll generally need to manage the payments on your own.
Once you're officially under debt review, your credit profile is flagged at the credit bureaus in South Africa, and they are aware of the actions you are taking to repay your debt. This means you cannot take out any further debt until the debt review process is complete.
Can I get my debt written off?
You can apply for a solution to write off some or all of your debt if you cannot pay them back in a reasonable amount of time. Be wary of adverts talking about ways to write off debt.
Years of commitment and hard work will all lead up to getting a Clearance Certificate. The certificate marks the end of the Debt Counselling journey. A consumer is eligible to receive it once all restructured debt is paid up and all bonds or long-term agreement payments are up to date.
Cancellation Letter Writing
When writing your cancellation letter, start by addressing it to the relevant parties involved in the debt review process. Clearly state your intention to withdraw from the process and provide any necessary information such as your name, ID number, and reference number.
If you agree to a repayment or settlement plan, get the plan and the debt collector's promises in writing before you make a payment. Those promises may include stopping collection efforts and ending or forgiving the debt once you have completed the plan.
Generally speaking, negative information such as late or missed payments, accounts that have been sent to collection agencies, accounts not being paid as agreed, or bankruptcies stays on credit reports for approximately seven years.
