Can any big cat be black?
There are Three big cats that can appear black. Jaguars, leopards and Cougars. They are no actually totally black, more like a very dark brown, if you see them in the sunlight you can still see the markings. What wild cat looks like a house cat?
Both black big cats are part of the genus Panthera but leopards are found in Africa and Asia while jaguars are found in the Americas. A rare variant within the jaguar species, it's estimated only 11 per cent of jaguars have this dark colouration.
Despite being a popular term, a black panther is not a separate species of big cat, rather, it is a non-official name often given to big cats that have this dark coloring. Both jaguars and leopards can exhibit melanism which has led to the term “black panther” being used to describe both species of big cat over time.
Cougar. There is no authenticated case of a truly melanistic cougar.
Some jaguars get genes that cause them to have melanism, which means that they will have fur that is all black. About six in every 100 jaguars will be all black. In the same way, there are also jaguars that are all white! These are called albino jaguars.
Black bobcats, more properly called “melanistic,” are often reported as “black panthers.” Melanism, like albinism, is a rare genetic trait that few are able to witness…in the photo below we can see the cat's unique coloring in the sunlight.
Can pumas be all black? No. Unlike jaguars and leopards, pumas are not known to exhibit melanism (commonly referred to as “black panther” individuals).
Florida panthers and all other puma subspecies are never black. Young and Goldman in their 1946 book "The Puma: Mysterious American Cat" noted that the color of pumas often matches the color of the deer, their primary prey (Figure 1). Puma kittens are spotted, which helps to camouflage them in the shadows of their den.
Black jaguars, the rarest of the panthera onca, live mostly in lowlands, tropical areas, near warm water and in heavily wooded savannas or forests. Near deserts, they live in the most heavily vegetated areas or in the closest mountains.
Cheetahs and cougars were left off the list because they don't belong to the genus Panthera. Cheetahs are the only living species that belong to the genus Acinonyx, while cougars belong to the genus Puma. Both cats also lack a hyoid bone, setting them apart once again from the roaring big cats.
Can a mountain lion be black?
Black mountain lions and black panthers are not recognized by science as distinct species, and reports of their existence in the United States are often attributed to misidentifications or myths.
The black color variants of cats like leopards, jaguars and ocelots are known by experts as “melanism.” Over the years, researchers have come up with a handful of hypotheses to explain why some wild cat species have these darker coats.
Mammals with this mutation are known as melanistic. In big cats, black panthers are actually jaguars or leopards. If you look closely enough, or have enough bright light, you can see spots amongst the dark fur. There has never been a confirmed or documented case of a melanistic mountain lion in the United States.
Jaguars have the strongest jaw muscles of all of the big cats. Their bite force is around 1,500 pounds per square inch, which is about double that of a tiger!
Melanistic leopards and jaguars are uncommon, with some studies estimating that at most 11 percent of these animals have this coloration. Confirmed sightings, however, are less frequent, and confirmed sightings of black leopards, especially in Africa, are rare events.
If an animal is small, they simply smack the prey's head and break its skull. If the animal is larger they pierce the skull with their canines. Jaguars have the most powerful jaws of all the big cats. Best estimates indicate only 600 black jaguars exist in the wild today.
The dark-furred cat has a genetic condition called melanism that has been observed in about a third of cats, but not previously in this species. In a scientific first, scientists have recorded the existence of an all-black Canada lynx.
In 2007, a rare melanistic Bobcat was captured in Florida. Less than a dozen black Bobcats have ever been reported, so officials took DNA samples and blood tests, then released the cat back into the wild.
They are generally tan to yellowish brown with dark brown or black streaks. The under parts are usually white with black spots and the insides of the legs are marked with black bars.
Black panthers are actually leopards or jaguars
Just like the superhero, black panthers are essentially fictional. Rather than referring to a specific species of big cat, “black panther” is really a colloquial term used to refer to dark jaguars (Panthera onca) and leopards (Panthera pardus).
Are black panthers rare?
The rare black panther was one of two cubs born to the more commonly colored and regularly seen spotted leopard. The rare, all-black coloring is due to an excess of melanin — which is the opposite of albinism and only occurs in animals, not humans — and causes a darker skin pigment.
Panthera is a genus within the family Felidae that was named and described by Lorenz Oken in 1816 who placed all the spotted cats in this group.
Use bear spray. There has never been a verifed panther attack on a human in Florida. In western states, where attacks by pumas have occurred very rarely, potential victims have fought back successfully with rocks, sticks, caps, jackets, garden tools and their bare hands.
It is extremely unlikely that this cat occurs in Texas although a rare visit by a wanderer from Mexico is possible. Last verified Texas records date from the turn of the century. The jaguar is now considered by most authorities to be extirpated from the state. Its food habits are not well known.
But the answer is Tiger. Tigers have better speed, coordination, balance, they are bigger and stronger. And fighting isn't just a contest of speed and power.
