Delayed flight leads to sleepless night for Mets before Subway Series opener at Yankee Stadium

  • By MIKE FITZPATRICK - AP Baseball Writer

A delayed flight led to a sleepless night for the bleary-eyed New York Mets before their Subway Series opener at Yankee Stadium. Following a 6-4 victory Monday night over the Marlins, the Mets got held up leaving Miami. They sat on the tarmac in South Florida for at least 2 1/2 hours, pitcher Luis Severino said, waiting as their plane was properly fueled. Severino said the Mets took off after 2 a.m. They landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport about 4:45 a.m., then bused across Queens to Citi Field, where players jumped in their cars around 5:30 a.m. and fought rush-hour traffic as they drove home in daylight. First baseman Pete Alonso said he probably fell asleep at 7 a.m. or so.

Defending Olympic champion Canada and New Zealand meet in their opening match at the Olympic tournament on Thursday. The drone incident occurred earlier this week, the New Zealand Olympic Committee said. The Canadian Olympic Committee has apologized.

Raiders bring training camp back to Southern California, where they maintain a strong fan base

  • By MARK ANDERSON - AP Sports Writer

The Las Vegas Raiders open training camp Wednesday in Costa Mesa, California. They maintain a strong fan base in Southern California. The Raiders played in Los Angeles from 1982-94. But fans aren't allowed to attend training camp. The Rams and Chargers claim the Los Angeles area as their marketing zone. This is Antonio Pierce's first camp as the Raiders' head coach. He said being away from the Las Vegas area allows the team to focus on football.

Orioles pitcher Albert Suárez, second baseman Jorge Mateo hurt during game against Marlins

  • AP

Baltimore pitcher Albert Suárez and second baseman Jorge Mateo got hurt in the third inning against Miami. Mateo collided with shortstop Gunnar Henderson as they dove to catch Jesús Sánchez’s grounder behind the second base bag. Mateo initially stood up but then fell to the ground and grimaced, favoring his left arm. Jacob Westburg shifted from third base to second and Ramón Urías entered at third. Otto López hit a hard comebacker that deflected off Suárez’s right foot. Manager Brandon Hyde and an athletic trainer came out to Suárez, who limped as he walked off the field. He was replaced by Keegan Akin.

Tiger Woods' son, Charlie, misses cut at US Junior Amateur after shooting 82-80 at Oakland Hills

  • By LARRY LAGE - AP Sports Writer

Tiger Woods watched his son, Charlie, shoot a 10-over 80 on Tuesday and miss the cut at 22 over through two rounds at the U.S. Junior Amateur. The 15-year-old Woods, who earned a spot in the 264-player field last month, finished near the bottom of the pack. The top 64 players advance to match play, which begins Wednesday. The 36-hole championship match is Saturday. Woods did fare better on the Oakland Hills South Course, which Ben Hogan dubbed “The Monster,” than he did with an opening 12-over 82 on the North Course.

Mariners place Julio Rodríguez, J.P. Crawford on 10-day injured list; Ty France cut

  • By TIM BOOTH - AP Sports Writer

The Seattle Mariners placed center fielder Julio Rodríguez on the 10-day injured list as his right ankle injury hasn’t responded to treatment as quickly as the team had hoped. Rodríguez wasn’t the only significant loss for Seattle as shortstop J.P. Crawford joined him on the injured list after sustaining a hairline fracture in his right pinky finger after getting hit by a pitch in Monday’s game. The two injuries are major blows to a Seattle that has seen a 10-game lead in the AL West disappear in barely a month after going 9-18 since June 19. Along with the injuries, Seattle designated for assignment first baseman Ty France.

49ers have no intention of trading Aiyuk

The San Francisco 49ers have no intention of granting star receiver Brandon Aiyuk his trade request and remain committed to getting a long-term extension done with one of their most important offensive players. General manager John Lynch says there are no absolutes but that the 49ers expect Aiyuk to be an “integral part of our team.” The 49ers arrived at training camp on Tuesday, with Aiyuk showing up with the rest of his teammates, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team didn’t make an announcement. Aiyuk had skipped the entire offseason program, including a mandatory minicamp. Aiyuk would have been subject to potential fines if he didn’t show up.

Rays SS Taylor Walls says gesture wasn't meant as Trump endorsem*nt and he likely won't do it again

  • By IAN HARRISON - Associated Press

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Taylor Walls said Tuesday that his Donald Trump-inspired celebration of a hit Sunday was not intended as an endorsem*nt of the Republican presidential candidate and added he was unlikely to do it again. Walls pumped his fist and shouted “Fight! Fight! Fight!” after hitting a double against the New York Yankees on Sunday, mimicking Trump’s reaction after a bullet hit his ear during a campaign event in Pennsylvania on July 13. The fifth-inning double off right-hander Marcus Stroman was Walls’ first hit since the shooting.

A sentence change assures the man who killed ex-Saints star Smith gets credit for home incarceration

  • AP

A sentencing change by a Louisiana judge assures that the man who fatally shot former New Orleans Saints star Will Smith will get credit for the time he served on home incarceration. New Orleans news outlets report that Cardell Hayes was formally re-sentenced Tuesday to 22 years and two months in prison. Judge Camille Buras had originally sentenced Hayes to 25 years, saying he would get credit for time served at home before his most recent trial. Prosecutors objected, arguing the law doesn't allow such a credit. So, Buras re-sentenced Hayes, officially reducing his sentence by 34 months.

Agreement halts Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' countersuit trial against woman who says he's her father

  • AP

The trial in a countersuit brought by Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones against a woman who says she’s his daughter and her mother abruptly ended as Jones agreed to drop the countersuit if the women dismissed pending lawsuits against him, including one where the billionaire was ordered to take a DNA test. The Dallas Morning News reports that the announcement in the courtroom in Texarkana, Texas, came on the second day of the trial. The trial had focused on whether 27-year-old Alexandra Davis and her mother, Cynthia Davis, had breached a 1998 agreement that barred them from suing to establish paternity. Jones filed the countersuit after a judge dismissed a defamation lawsuit brought against him by Alexandra Davis.

Stanford, Cal ready for cross-country flights this football season in their new ACC home

  • By AARON BEARD - AP Sports Writer

Stanford and California are ready for the challenges that will come with cross-country travel for football games in their new Atlantic Coast Conference home this fall. The schools join SMU as new arrivals to the league. They landed in the ACC after the Pac-12 disintegrated as a power conference with teams leaving for other leagues. Cal quarterback Fernando Mendoza called it a “scary” time while Stanford quarterback Ashton Daniels called it “unsettling.” The plan for the ACC west-coast members is to travel a day earlier for those road games for extra time to prepare in the new time zone.

Mets put Scott on injured list with sprained elbow ligament; Senga set for season debut Friday

  • By MIKE FITZPATRICK - AP Baseball Writer

Mets rookie Christian Scott has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a sprained ligament in his right elbow, sidelining New York’s top pitching prospect indefinitely. Scott is 0-3 with a 4.56 ERA in nine major league starts since making his debut May 4 with an impressive performance at Tampa Bay. He mentioned his elbow was aching following Sunday’s outing in Miami, and he underwent an MRI on Tuesday when the Mets returned home. Scott was put on the IL with a sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow, and left-hander Alex Young was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse. New York manager Carlos Mendoza says Scott will be examined by multiple doctors before it’s determined how much time he could miss.

An attorney for the defendants tells The Associated Press the full settlement agreement of antitrust lawsuits involving the NCAA and college sports’ wealthiest conferences is expected to be filed with a federal court by Friday. The NCAA along with the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and Southeastern Conference agreed on May 23 to the framework of a $2.77 billion settlement of multiple antitrust lawsuits that challenged limits on college athlete compensation. Tua Tagovailoa reports for first day of team meetings as contract extension talks continue

  • AP

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has reported to training camp for team meetings, a sign that good faith could continue in ongoing contract negotiations. The Dolphins will begin workouts on Wednesday. Entering his fifth season, Tagovailoa is still playing under the contract he signed when the Dolphins made him the fifth overall selection of the 2020 draft. He improved his negotiating leverage for the coveted deal by throwing for 29 touchdowns and a league-best 4,624 yards last season.

Ohio State coach Day finds himself on hot seat

Ohio State coach Ryan Day sounds confident and comfortable discussing this year’s football team. Never mind the three Michigan banners hanging over his head and slightly behind the podium where he’s speaking in Indianapolis. It’s also a not-so-subtle reminder about the looming stakes when he heads home to Columbus, Ohio. Three straight losses to Michigan have put Day squarely on the hot seat despite being 39-3 in conference play since taking over the Buckeyes program in 2018. Whether it's fair or not, Day understands that wining every game is the expectation at one of college football's most storied programs — and beating Michigan is the No. 1 goal every season.

Newly acquired S Eddie Jackson finds plenty of familiar faces with the Baltimore Ravens

  • By NOAH TRISTER - AP Sports Writer

The Baltimore Ravens have shown they can make productive additions late in the offseason. No wonder hopes are so high for Eddie Jackson after they signed the veteran safety in the past few days. Last year the Ravens added Jadeveon Clowney in August and Kyle Van Noy in late September, and those two combined for 18 1/2 sacks. In 2021, Baltimore signed Justin Houston around the start of training camp. He gave the Ravens 14 sacks over the next two seasons. Now the 30-year-old Jackson arrives after seven years with the Chicago Bears.

Rams rework Stafford's contract to avoid holdout, but no extension

The Los Angeles Rams have come to a resolution with quarterback Matthew Stafford to avoid a potential holdout during training camp, which starts Wednesday at Loyola Marymount University. Coach Sean McVay says the agreement does not include a contract extension for Stafford, who is entering the second season of a four-year, $160 million deal he signed in March 2022 shortly after leading the Rams to a Super Bowl championship. Instead of a new deal, the Rams and the 36-year-old Stafford reworked his existing contract. Details of the modification were not immediately available.

Florida coach Billy Napier and two co-defendants ask court to dismiss Jaden Rashada lawsuit

  • By MARK LONG - AP Sports Writer

Florida coach Billy Napier and two co-defendants have filed motions to dismiss quarterback Jaden Rashada’s lawsuit regarding a failed name, image and likeness deal worth nearly $14 million. Napier, Florida booster/automotive technology businessman Hugh Hathco*ck and Marcus Castro-Walker, the program’s former director of player engagement, asked a U.S. District Court in Pensacola to dismiss the complaint. Napier’s attorney, Hank Coxe III of the Bedell Firm in Jacksonville, argued in a 29-page response that facts are “sorely lacking from the complaint.” Coxe says “nothing alleged in the complaint supports the notion that Napier participated in any wrongdoing.”

Browns receiver Amari Cooper restructures final year of contract, reports to camp, AP source says

  • By TOM WITHERS - AP Sports Writer

A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that Cleveland Browns wide receiver Amari Cooper has restructured the final year of his contract, adding $5 million of incentives to his $20 million base. Cooper held out of mandatory minicamp to protest for more money. But he reported to training camp after agreeing to the new deal, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract was still being finalized. Cooper has been the Browns’ top receiver since he was acquired in a 2022 trade from the Dallas Cowboys. The 30-year-old has caught 150 passes for 2,410 yards and 14 touchdowns in his two seasons in Cleveland.
